One aspect of our service I highly appreciate is the Prayers of the People. I do confess, however, that this is a time when my mind can wander a bit. I have to listen to each word and affirm the reader’s prayer, otherwise, I wonder if I am actually contributing to the prayers of God’s people.
Our prayers are taken from the Book of Common Prayer: both Rite I (BCP:328) and Rite II (BCP:383). Rite II has six different prayer formats from which to use. My experience is that each Episcopal Church uses a version of one of these forms or a slightly modified one. Some churches use readers to pray these prayers, like we do, while others use deacons.
The prayers cover key categories:
The worldwide church.
Our nation.
The welfare of the world.
Local community concerns.
Those who are suffering or in trouble.
The deceased.
For myself, I find it quite powerful when my name is mentioned. It’s quite humbling. I’m grateful that the church is praying for me, whether 5 people or 200 people.
It’s a precious thing to address the Lord of the universe, our Father, and friend.
Imagine how powerful these prayers would be if we all fully engaged them during the service!
