We’ve been exploring the various elements of our service, and in recent weeks have focused on the Eucharistic Prayer.
I’ve broken that prayer down into four components:
The Offertory Sentence - Jesus took.
The Eucharistic Prayer - Jesus blessed.
The Fraction - Jesus broke.
The Communion - Jesus gave.
Obviously, it’s all about Jesus.
This week our focus is on Communion. I can’t say this any better, so here is a quote from Praying Shapes Believing by Leonel L. Mitchell:
For it is in receiving communion that we are most closely united
with Christ in the saving acts of his dying and rising. Once for all
in baptism, and week by week in the eucharist, Christians are
sacramentally united with the crucified and risen Lord. p. 179
Do you want to connect with Jesus? Come to his table.
Do you want to serve the Lord? Eat his flesh.
Do you want to grow in your faith? Drink his blood.
There is a reason Jesus instituted Communion with his followers. It is a tangible, simple, heartfelt way to experience Jesus in the community of his church.
The Book of Hebrews tells us to not forsake gathering in Jesus’ Name. Stick with Jesus and his people and your life will benefit.
