Why I Give To Grace: Drick Heitman

I don’t have any tattoos on my body. But if I were to get one, it would be “esse quam videri” right above my heart.

The late Reverend Richard Bakley once told me that to be (rather than just appear to be) a Christian is the hardest challenge anyone can accept in this life. The more I do life, the more I am forced to agree. How many times have I failed to forgive, to love my neighbor as myself, and on and on? But I persist in trying. Rather than bemoan my failures, I try to value my successes. I can give of my time, talent, and treasures and it gives me hope on the “be a Christian” part of the ledger rather than “appear to be” side. Revelation 3:17 says,” For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are (I am) wretched, pitiable, blind, and naked.”

I have prospered through God’s grace. My needs are so small compared to those of others around the world. My life is so easy, despite my daily complaints.

Esse quam videri - the motto of the state of North Carolina. “To be rather than to seem.” Why do I pledge? To get a little bit closer to being rather than appearing to be.
